Objective: This study aimed to identify factors associated with depression among youth preparing to transition out of care, the stage prior to becoming young adults preparing for independent living, and to examine, in an exploratory manner, whether indirect pathways through resilience are observed in the relationship between these factors and depression. By doing so, this study sought to identify psychosocial pathways related to depression among youth preparing to transition out of care and to provide basic evidence for the need to strengthen resilience and psychosocial support before care termination. Methods: This study used data from the Survey on the Preparation for Independent Living of Youth, provided through the Health and Welfare Data Portal of the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs. The final analytic sample included 946 youth preparing to transition out of care aged 15 to 24 years. The main variables included sociodemographic characteristics, care-related factors, independent-living preparation factors, psychosocial factors such as social support and self-efficacy, resilience as the mediator, and depression as the outcome variable. The main analyses focused on continuous depression scores using the original depression score. Differences in depression according to general characteristics were examined using t-tests, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. Multiple linear regression analysis was then conducted to identify factors associated with continuous depression scores, and robust standard errors were applied in consideration of possible heteroskedasticity in the regression model. In addition, the mediation package in R was used to examine the potential mediating role of resilience. Analyses using dichotomized depression were conducted as supplementary analyses and are presented in the appendix. Results: Multiple linear regression analysis showed that gender, type of out-of-home care, total duration of out-of-home care, experience of living in other residential facilities, social support, and self-efficacy were statistically significantly associated with continuous depression scores. In particular, social support and self-efficacy were negatively associated with depression, indicating that higher levels of psychosocial resources tended to be associated with lower depression scores. The mediation analysis showed significant indirect pathways through resilience for social support and self-efficacy. Social support was directly associated with depression and also showed an indirect pathway through resilience. For self-efficacy, the direct effect was not statistically significant, whereas the indirect effect through resilience was significant. In addition, indirect effects through resilience were partially observed for foster care, total duration of out-of-home care, school status, and age. However, for some variables, the direct and indirect effects were observed in opposite directions. Therefore, the proportion mediated needed to be interpreted cautiously, with emphasis on the direction and statistical significance of the indirect effect rather than as a substantive proportion of contribution. Conclusion: This study found that depression among youth preparing to transition out of care needs to be understood not only in relation to individual characteristics, but also in connection with care experiences, the context of transition to independent living, social networks, and psychosocial resources. The findings also suggest that indirect pathways through resilience may be observed in the relationships between selected factors and depression. These results indicate that mental health support for youth preparing to transition out of care should go beyond identifying risk factors for depression and should also consider modifiable psychosocial resources such as social support, self-efficacy, and resilience. In particular, for factors with significant indirect effects through resilience, strengthening resilience may serve as an important intervention point related to reducing depression. For factors without significant indirect effects, individualized support that directly considers the characteristics and context of each factor should be provided alongside resilience-focused support. However, because this study used cross-sectional data, temporal ordering and causal directions among variables cannot be confirmed. Therefore, the findings should be interpreted as an exploratory examination of the potential mediating role of resilience. Future studies using longitudinal data are needed to examine more rigorously the trajectories of depression, resilience, and psychosocial resources before and after care termination.
