In the performing arts industry, the rise of online review culture has transformed how audiences discover and choose performing arts events. On major ticketing platforms, a single musical production can receive thousands of audience reviews. This considerable scale of audience participation has turned electronic word of mouth (eWOM) into a central driver of consumer decision-making. Despite this shift, the mechanisms underlying the persuasive impact of these reviews remain unclear. It is still unknown whether effectiveness depends more on how a review is written or on who is reading it. Therefore, this study examines the relative influence of review style, which is defined as emotional versus rational, and reader characteristics on the effectiveness of eWOM in the performing arts. Drawing on the Elaboration Likelihood Model, a between-subjects experiment exposed 486 Taiwanese performing arts consumers to either an emotional or a rational positive review, and examined their responses about individual differences in Need for Cognition (NFC) and Need for Affect (NFA). The results showed no meaningful effect of review style on either review adoption or purchase intention. However, matching effects were observed, with NFC predicting outcomes in the rational condition and NFA predicting outcomes in the emotional condition. Notably, across all analyses, NFA consistently exhibited stronger effects than NFC. In addition, the interaction between NFA and NFC under the emotional review condition predicted purchase intention but not review adoption, suggesting that emotional resonance may shape behavioral decisions through pathways that partly bypass cognitive adoption processes. Overall, these findings suggest that in performing arts contexts, the effectiveness of eWOM is shaped less by message style alone and more by its alignment with audience affective orientation, indicating that strategically segmenting audiences and tailoring message styles accordingly may be more effective than adopting a uniform framing approach. This study contributes to eWOM research by highlighting the primacy of receiver characteristics over message framing in the performing arts domain.
