This study examines the factors associated with global audience satisfaction with drama adaptations based on Korean webtoons and web novels from the perspective of brand extension theory. Focusing on the process through which webtoons and web novels are extended into television dramas, the study analyzes a total of 86 adapted dramas using IMDb ratings and review data. Specifically, the quantitative analysis draws on all 10,153 reviews posted for the 86 dramas, while the qualitative analysis is based on a sample of 565 reviews. The data were collected through web crawling of IMDb webpages, from which overall ratings, the number of rating participants, review ratings, the number of review participants, and review texts were obtained for each drama. Audience satisfaction is operationalized using drama ratings (overall ratings and review ratings) and participation indicators (number of rating participants and number of review participants). In particular, the study empirically investigates how audience satisfaction is related to similarity to and dissimilarity from the original work, genre characteristics, and the presence of an original fandom, while supplementing the quantitative findings with qualitative content analysis of viewer reviews. The results of t-test analyses indicate that higher perceived content-based similarity to the original work is associated with higher review ratings, suggesting that the concept of fit, or similarity, emphasized in brand extension theory is also applicable in the context of drama adaptations. In contrast, discussions of dissimilarity between the adaptation and the original work were found to function less as a direct driver of higher ratings and more as a factor that stimulates visibility and engagement, such as increased review participation. Differences were also observed according to the modality of the original source. Adaptations based on webtoons, a visually oriented medium, tended to generate higher levels of review participation, indicating their effectiveness as source materials for transmedia storytelling. By contrast, adaptations based on web novels, a text-based medium, showed a stronger emphasis on evaluations of literary elements such as characters and story. With respect to genre characteristics, romance adaptations demonstrated relatively lower levels of audience participation compared to general Korean dramas, suggesting that audiences for webtoon- and web novel–based adaptations may display distinctive consumption patterns. In addition, the presence of an original fandom emerged as a key factor associated with higher ratings and participation overall. Regression analyses further reveal that original fandoms exhibit a complex reception pattern: while they express critical attitudes toward deviations from the original work, they simultaneously maintain affective attachment and assign relatively high overall ratings. Post hoc analyses confirm that the presence of an original fandom moderates the relationship between negative evaluations of dissimilarity from the original work and review ratings. Qualitative content analysis further shows that viewers do not always evaluate adaptations primarily through direct comparison with the original work. When an adapted drama achieves sufficient narrative coherence and internal quality, dissimilarity from the original can also be positively received as a point of differentiation. By extending brand extension theory to the media content domain, this study contributes theoretically to adaptation research and offers practical implications by highlighting the importance of balancing fidelity and creative transformation, as well as strategically managing original fandoms, in the production of adapted dramas within the global OTT environment.
