The purpose of this study was to examine the moderated mediation effects of rejection sensitivity and partner support in the relationship between insecure attachment with their parents and fear of intimacy in romantic relationships among college students. Participants were 309 college students in universities located in Seoul and the Gyeonggi area. Insecure attachment with parents was measured using the Early Parental Attachment Scale (EPAS; Kim, 2017). Rejection sensitivity was measured using the College Student Rejection Sensitivity Scale (Park & Yang, 2017). Partner support was measured using the Social Support Scale (Park, 1985). Fear of intimacy in romantic relationships was measured using the Korean version of the Fear of Intimacy Components Questionnaire (K-FICQ; Kwon et al., 2017). Data were analyzed using t-tests, Cohen’s d, Pearson’s correlations, and moderated mediation Model 14 of the PROCESS macro for SPSS. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, significant gender differences were found in parental insecure attachment, rejection sensitivity, fear of intimacy with romantic partners, and perceived partner support. Female students reported higher levels of parental insecure attachment, rejection sensitivity, and fear of intimacy than male students, whereas male students perceived greater partner support than female students. Second, parental insecure attachment, rejection sensitivity, and fear of intimacy with a romantic partner were positively associated with one another. Romantic partner support was negatively associated with parental insecure attachment, rejection sensitivity, and fear of intimacy. These patterns of relationships were similar for both male and female students. Third, parental insecure attachment was found to influence fear of intimacy in romantic relationships through rejection sensitivity. The moderating role of partner support in this mediating pathway was significant only for female students. These results suggest that partner support has a buffering effect on the relationship between parental insecure attachment and fear of intimacy in romantic relationships, mediated by rejection sensitivity. Furthermore, because these effects differed by gender, the findings highlight the importance of considering gender-specific pathways.
