A Comparative Study on the Locality Represented in Korean and Chinese TV Dramas : Focusing on Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and Meet Yourself

This paper aims to conduct a comparative analysis of the characteristics of locality as represented in South Korean and Chinese television dramas, with a particular focus on the Korean drama Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha(English title of <갯마을 차차차>) and the Chinese drama Meet Yourself(English title of <바람이 머무는 곳>). The study first clarifies the concept of locality and the scope of relevant research, and then, from the perspective of the “structure of feeling,” examines why screen productions that foreground locality emerged simultaneously and in large numbers in both countries. It further investigates the roles played by so-called “external” elements—such as local cuisine, dialects, customs, and patterns of community formation—within the narrative, before proceeding to an in-depth analysis of the underlying thematic concerns embedded in these works. In recent years, local-centered narrative dramas in both South Korea and China have exhibited notable growth. These works typically construct their narratives around protagonists who relocate to or visit small towns or rural areas, highlighting distinctive geographical and cultural features while depicting the slow-paced lifestyles of local residents, thereby offering audiences a sense of emotional healing. This trend is closely related to the desire to escape intense urban competition, the alienation of human relationships brought about by accelerated industrialization, and the growing nostalgia for communal life that emerged in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. The proliferation of local-based narrative dramas in both countries may be understood as a form of resistance to urban-centered modern life, carrying significant implications within the broader history of television drama. However, given differences in national governance, stages of development, and value orientations in cultural production, the social contexts from which these dramas emerge are not identical. In South Korea, this trend resonates with an expanding desire for “de-urbanization,” whereas in China it is closely intertwined with the nation’s entry into a moderately prosperous society and the discourse surrounding rural revitalization—policy orientations that are also reflected in television drama production. Both Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and Meet Yourself present the natural beauty of their respective locales through visually evocative imagery, offering viewers a refreshing aesthetic experience while stimulating aspirations for regional tourism. By actively incorporating cultural elements such as local cuisine, dialects, folk songs, and traditional activities, these dramas evoke nostalgia and construct warm, inclusive community atmospheres that rekindle viewers’ longing for communal life of the past. Moreover, functioning in part as visual promotional media, these works—coupled with their popularity—have facilitated the conversion of viewers into actual tourists, thereby promoting the integration of audiovisual content and local tourism. The thematic implications realized through locality in both dramas are also noteworthy. The leisurely lifestyles of local residents, close-knit interpersonal relationships, and restrained material desires portrayed in the narratives collectively present an idealized vision of authentic life. Characters who migrate from outside gradually assimilate into these communal environments, revealing the dramas’ affirmative stance toward “community-oriented living.” Through their experiences, characters reassess their value systems, redefine the meaning of “success,” and seek a balance between local rootedness and entrepreneurial pursuits. Furthermore, by highlighting young people who devote themselves to work in remote regions, these dramas emphasize passion and altruism, reinforcing an idealized image of the local community. The inclusive, harmonious atmosphere and positive value orientation conveyed by these works carry important implications for the formation and dissemination of constructive social sentiments. Although the two dramas share genre similarities and exhibit considerable overlap in their use of locality-related elements and value transmission, clear differences emerge in their portrayals of regional development challenges, romantic fulfillment, representations of traditional culture, and value systems. These differences stem from variations in political systems, stages of economic development, cultural promotion strategies, and the social functions ascribed to cultural works in South Korea and China. In addition, local-based narrative dramas—including Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha and Meet Yourself—face certain limitations, such as a relative lack of dramatic conflict, formulaic narrative structures, declining appeal in subsequent developments, and the excessive idealization of local societies. Building on these observations, this paper broadens the scope of analysis by incorporating other dramas from both countries that address similar or related themes, with the aim of exploring new possibilities for the future development of locality-centered regional narrative dramas.
