On the 31st of May Hichem Maraoui a French citizen of Tunisian descent is killed at his place of residence. The suspect Christophe Belgembe is quickly arrested for ‘terrorist act of assassination targeting individuals based on their ethnic or national origin.’ Rapidly the National Counterterrorism Prosecutor’s Office is given the investigation . This recent attack highlighted the threat that the ultra-right represents for France. The aim of this study is to understand the process of self-radicalization of teenagers to the ultra right and what are the solutions to the problem. This essay intervenes in order to remedy to a gap on the literature of self-radicalization that extensively discuss the process of self-radicalization but lacks specificity concerning teenagers. Furthermore, while the attacks of 9/11 marked a turning point in terrorism studies focusing on jihadism, the recent rise of the extreme right in sphere of power has legitimized part of the ultra-right ideology. This research has shown that social media plays a crucial role in the radicalization of the French Youth toward the ultra-right. Consequently, addressing the narrative of the ultra-right is crucial in fighting against radicalism in France.
