Global Citizenship Education through English Literature : Reading Carl Hiaasen's Hoot

Despite living in an era of unprecedented material wealth, the problems that requires collective efforts of humanity are becoming increasingly severe. As a result, global citizenship education, which helps individuals recognize their interconnectedness with others and encourages them to engage with various global issues, has become increasingly important. Literary works provide an educational value for global citizenship education by offering opportunities to confront conflicts that are difficult to experience directly and consider potential solutions, thus fostering growth as members of a community. This paper explores the potential of literary works for global citizenship education through an analysis of Carl Hiaasen's Hoot. The story, centered around the threat to an owl habitat due to the construction of a pancake house, presents two key elements of global citizenship education: environmental awareness and a sense of community. By following the characters' transformation in their awareness of environmental issues and their success in protecting the owls through community solidarity, readers are provided an opportunity to reevaluate their own environmental consciousness and grow as members of the global community. This study has confirmed that literary works have considerable potential to help adolescents develop into global citizens. As the necessity of global citizenship education is now widely acknowledged, continued exploration of literary works that address various themes of global citizenship education is academically worthwhile.
