The Formation of 4-character Sino-Japanese by 2-character Sino-Japanese using Multiple Usages and Restrictions of Lexical Category: Focusing on Nouns and Adjectives

초록/요약

The present study focused on the 2-character Sino-Japanese “noun/adjective” and examined how those parts of speech emerged when they form 4-character Sino-Japanese. Three groups were set and the tendencies and characteristics of each group were analyzed, considering the relationship between the semantic combination patterns of the preceding and following components of the 4-character. The results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) From the semantic combination patterns of 4-character, the tendency of the “adjective” to emerge was in the order “subject-predicate” > “scope” > “parallel.” (2) When only the “noun” or “adjective” appears, it can be considered that the semantic combination patterns of the preceding and following components are restricted by factors such as “attributive modification” or “adverbial modification.” (3) Regarding “相当”,“過剰”, it can be considered a distinct category where the parts of speech that appear at the 2-character Sino-Japanese level differ from those at the 4-character Sino-Japanese level. (5) In the emergence of parts of speech for 4-character Sino-Japanese where 2-character of “noun/adjective” can be placed in the following component, the semantic combination patterns among the elements of the 4-character.
