A Corpus-Based Lexical Analysis of High School Russian Language Textbooks

This study conducts a corpus-based lexical analysis to examine the extent to which the vocabulary presented in high school Russian language textbooks reflects actual Russian language usage. The analysis focuses on two high school textbooks, Russian I and Russian II, which were developed in accordance with the revised curriculum promulgated by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea in 2015. Using AntConc, lexical frequency, type-token ratio (TTR), and lemma counts were extracted and analyzed. The vocabulary lists from the textbooks were quantitatively compared to a Russian frequency dictionary (Ляшевская & Шаров, 2009) to assess their authenticity. The results reveal that approximately 86% of the textbook vocabulary matches the top 10,000 words in the frequency dictionary. However, the proportion of high-frequency function words, which are essential for natural language use, was relatively low. Furthermore, the number of key lexical items repeated eight times or more within the textbooks was insufficient to effectively promote incidental vocabulary learning. These findings suggest that the current high school Russian textbooks do not fully reflect authentic language use. The study highlights the need for future textbook development to incorporate more authentic vocabulary selections and to implement strategies for increased word repetition to support vocabulary acquisition.
