The Effects of Productive Vocabulary and Text Reading Fluency on Korean EFL Learners’ Writing

초록/요약

The strong connection between reading and writing is widely recognized, with numerous studies investigating the influence of various aspects of reading comprehension on writing skills. However, attention to the effects of productive vocabulary reading proficiency on writing abilities has been limited. Additionally, the majority of the existing studies have primarily focused on the intermediary role of reading comprehension ability. This study sought to address this research gap by examining how productive vocabulary and text reading fluency, while taking reading comprehension into account, affect the writing performance of advanced Korean English as a foreign language (EFL) learners. The results demonstrated that both vocabulary knowledge and reading fluency significantly influence advanced Korean EFL learners' writing performance even after controlling for the effects of reading comprehension. Notably, productive vocabulary knowledge appears to have a stronger predictive relationship with writing performance compared to reading fluency. These findings hold important implications for understanding the connection between reading and writing skills and offer valuable insights for literac y instruction in the Korean EFL context.
