Development and Effects of the Parent Education Program for Bi-ethnic Socialization of Children from Multicultural Families

초록/요약

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the effects of a parent education program aimed at improving bi-ethnic socialization attitudes and practices of parents in multicultural families with school-aged children. To develop the program, a literature review and in-depth interviews were conducted. To evaluate the effects of the program, 39 mothers from multicultural families in the Seoul metropolitan area, whose children were in grades 1 to 3, participated in this study. The experimental group consisted of 20 mothers, while the control group included 19 mothers. Three measures were modified and used to assess the program’s effects: the Cultural Socialization Attitudes Measure (CSAM: Derlan et al., 2016), the Racial Socialization Competency Scale (RaSCS: Anderson, Jones, et al., 2020), and the Latino Immigrant Family Socialization (LIFS: Ayón, 2018). To assess the mothers' subjective experiences with the program participation, a survey and in-depth interviews were conducted. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Cronbach’s alpha, t-tests, Chi-squared tests, and ANCOVAs. The major findings were as follows: 1. A 10-session (60 minutes per session) parent education program was developed. The objective of this program is to support parents in the bi-ethnic socialization of their children by helping them understand the importance of bi-ethnic socialization and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills. The sessions focused on parent characteristics covering topics including attitudes toward their country of origin and Korea, as well as thoughts and feelings on bi-ethnic socialization. The sessions on child characteristics address issues such as identity formation, preparation for bias, and peer relationships in multicultural families. The sessions on family environment characteristics explore support from spouses, family members, neighbors, and the communities. 2. The parent education program was effective in enhancing confidence in bi-ethnic socialization and improving engagement in bi-ethnic socialization, including adaptation, advocacy, cultural socialization, and value diversity. However, the program did not show significant effects on cultural socialization attitudes or promoting mistrust. In addition, participants were satisfied with the content and delivery of the program. These findings suggest that the parent education program developed in this study influences parents' attitudes and practices toward bi-ethnic socialization, thereby supporting multicultural families and their children.
