The association between family structure and adolescent mental health and juvenile delinquency : A comparison of six different family structures based on living arrangements

Family structure has been identified as a critical factor influencing adolescent mental health and behavior. While studies frequently examine single-parent and divorced families, limited research has explored adolescents in institutional care. This study aims to assess how different family structures, particularly non-intact families and institutional care, impact adolescent mental health and delinquency in South Korea. Using data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS) collected between 2011 and 2018, this study analyzed 547,668 adolescents. Robust standard errors were employed to mitigate heteroscedasticity, and a multivariate regression model and a logistic regression was used to compare mental health and delinquency outcomes across family structures. The findings indicate that adolescents from non-intact families experience higher levels of depression and delinquency than those from intact families, with adolescents in institutional care showing even more severe outcomes. These results highlight the importance of developing targeted support policies that can help address the specific challenges faced by adolescents from various family backgrounds.
