Association between Mothers' Perfectionism and Parental Burnout: The Mediating Role of Parenting Guilt

초록/요약

The aim of this study was to examine the mediating role of parenting guilt in the relationship between mothers’ perfectionism and parental burnout. Participants were 301 mothers of children aged from three to five. They were recruited from childcare centers and kindergartens in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Daejeon provinces in South Korea. The Korean version of the Parental Burnout Assessment (PBA: Eom & Lee, 2020) and the Hewitt Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (HMPS: Han, 1993) were used to assess parental burnout and perfectionism, respectively. The Parenting Guilt Questionnaire (Yoo, 2016) was modified to assess parenting guilt. Collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlations, and Model 4 in the PROCESS macro (Hayes, 2013) in SPSS. The major findings of the study are as follows: First, the mean of self-oriented perfectionism was higher than those of other-oriented or socially prescribed perfectionism. On average, mothers reported moderate levels of parenting guilt. In terms of parental burnout, the mean of exhaustion was the highest followed by contrast, emotional distancing, and saturation. Second, significant associations were found among perfectionism, parental burnout, and parenting guilt. Perfectionism was positively correlated with both parental burnout and parenting guilt. Notably, socially prescribed perfectionism exhibited a stronger relationship with both parental burnout and parenting guilt compared to self-oriented or other-oriented perfectionism did. Additionally, a positive relationship was found between parental burnout and parenting guilt. Third, parenting guilt mediated the relationship between perfectionism and parental burnout. The effects of self-oriented and other-oriented perfectionism on parental burnout were significant only indirectly via parenting guilt, whereas the impact of socially prescribed perfectionism on parental burnout was significant both directly and indirectly. These results provide evidence that supports the detrimental effect of perfectionism on parental burnout, underscoring exacerbating influence of socially prescribed perfectionism on parental burnout. The findings also highlight the mediating role of parenting guilt in the relationship between perfectionism and parental burnout.
