From Screens to Streets: Interpretations of English-Speaking Expatriates in Korea with Reference to Their Prior Experiences of Hallyu and Cross-Cultural Adjustment

This study explored the role of Hallyu (the Korean Wave) in the cross-cultural adjustment of English-speaking expatriates in Korea. Through a series of semi-structured focus group interviews and one in-depth interview with 19 participants total, this research examined how prior experience with Korean popular culture affects the expectations, preparedness, and adaptation processes of expatriates, drawing on aspects of Kim’s (2001) cross-cultural adaptation theory and Croucher and Kramer’s (2017) cultural fusion theory. Findings indicated that Hallyu plays a significant role in shaping realistic expectations and reducing culture shock, thereby facilitating smoother initial adjustment periods. Participants with prior Hallyu experience demonstrated a better understanding of social customs and basic language skills, which contributed to their confidence and competence in daily tasks. However, despite the initial advantages, Hallyu exposure alone was insufficient to overcome long-term challenges such as discrimination, legal issues, and the feeling of being an outsider. The study suggests that for Korea to become a more permanent home for foreign residents, substantial social and systemic changes are required, including the implementation of anti-discrimination laws. This research bridges the fields of intercultural communication and expatriate studies, highlighting the potential of mass media as a tool for anticipatory adjustment in international relocations.

이 연구는 한류가 한국에서 영어권 이주민들의 문화적 적응에 어떤 역할을 하는지 탐구했다. 반구조 집단 인터뷰와 심층 인터뷰를 통해 총 19명의 연구 참여자들에게 한류에 대한 사전 노출이 이들의 기대, 준비 및 적응 과정에 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 탐구하며, 김(2001)의 문화간 적응 이론과 크라우처와 크레이머(2017)의 문화 융합 이론을 부분적으로 활용했다. 연구 결과에 따르면, 한류는 현실적인 기대를 형성하고 문화 충격을 줄이는 데 중요한 역할을 하여 초기 적응을 원활하게 하는 데 도움이 된다는 것을 보여주었다. 한류에 노출된 참가자들은 사회적 관습과 기본 언어 능력에 있어 더 나은 이해를 보여주었으며, 이는 일상적인 업무에서 이들의 자신감과 능력 향상에 기여했다. 그러나 이러한 초기의 이점에도 불구하고, 한류 사전 노출만으로는 이주민에 대한 차별, 법적 문제 및 아웃사이더로서의 느낌과 같은 장기적인 어려움을 극복하는 데 충분하지 않았다. 이 연구는 외국인 이주민들에게 한국이 더 오래 살 만한 곳이 되기 위해, 차별금지법의 시행을 포함한 사회적 및 체제적 변화가 필요하다고 제안한다. 또한 이 연구는 문화 간 커뮤니케이션과 이주민 연구 분야를 연결하여, 직업을 위한 국제 이주에서 매스 미디어의 예상적 적응 도구로서의 잠재력을 강조한다.
