This thesis critically explores the evolution of female revenge narratives in Korean TV dramas (K-Dramas) post-2000, with a focus on analyzing their differences from traditional narratives and the socio-cultural significance they reflect. The study begins by tracing the history and literary origins of revenge dramas, establishing connections with Eastern literature, and provides a detailed description of the significant transformation of K-Dramas since the early 21st century. Notably highlighted is the re-imagination of contemporary female revenge narratives, which not only mirrors broader social changes but also reflects the ongoing development of gender perceptions. The research initially conducts a comprehensive and thorough literature review, laying a solid foundation for understanding the development of revenge narratives. Subsequently, through in-depth analysis, revenge dramas are defined, female revenge narratives are elaborately explained, and the socio-cultural background that has led to the emergence and evolution of the female avenger role is considered. To investigate the theme and structural dimensions of female revenge in Korean TV dramas, this study employs semiotic analysis as its core research method. Originating in linguistics, semiotic analysis provides a powerful framework for dissecting visual media, making it highly suitable for studying TV dramas. This approach includes a detailed semiotic analysis of K-Dramas post-2000, with a focus on the theme of female revenge, to reveal its symbolic meanings and cultural connotations. The setting of research objectives and questions guided an in-depth exploration of motives, narrative patterns, and outcomes in female revenge stories. The core part of the analysis focuses on dissecting the victimization and revenge stages in K-Dramas, showcasing the evolution of these narrative patterns since 2000. The study found that the portrayal of female characters has shifted from traditional binary oppositions to more complex and powerful forms. Additionally, the research also explores the interweaving of individual resistance with broader social issues, as well as the limitations of these narratives in the current socio-cultural context. In summary, this thesis comprehensively outlines the significant changes in the portrayal of female revenge themes in Korean TV dramas (K-Dramas) since 2000. These narratives not only reflect a shift in societal attitudes towards gender and power but also significantly contribute to this transformation. The significance of these changes extends well beyond the field of media studies; they offer profound insights and implications for broader cultural discussions on female roles and representations in contemporary society.

본 논문은 2000년 이후 한국 TV 드라마 에서 여성 복수 서사의 변화를 비판적으로 탐구하며, 전통 서사와의 차이점과 이들이 반영하는 사회문화적 의미를 분석하는 것에 초점을 두고 있다. 이 연구는 복수극의 역사와 문학적 기원을 추적하고 동양 문학과의 연관성을 확립하는 것으로 시작하며, 21세기 초 이후 한국 TV 드라마의 중요한 변화를 자세히 설명한다. 주목할 만한 것은 현대 여성 복수 서사의 재상화이며, 이는 더 넓은 사회적 변화를 반영할 뿐만 아니라 지속적인 젠더 인식의 발전을 반영한다. 연구는 초기에 종합적이고 철저한 문헌 고찰을 수행하여 복수 서사 전개를 이해할 수 있는 탄탄한 토대를 마련한다. 이어서 심층 분석을 통해 복수극을 규정하고, 여성 복수 서사를 정교하게 설명하며, 여성 복수자 역할의 등장과 진화를 이끈 사회문화적 배경을 고찰한다. 본 연구는 한국 TV드라마에서 여성복수의 주제와 구조적 차원을 규명하기 위해 기호학적 분석을 핵심 연구방법으로 사용한다. 언어학에서 기원한 기호학적 분석은 시각적 매체를 해부하는 강력한 틀을 제공하여 TV드라마 연구에 매우 적합하다. 이 접근법은 여성복수의 주제를 중심으로 2000년 이후 한국 TV 드라마의 상징적 의미와 문화적 함의를 밝히는 세부 기호학적 분석을 포함한다. 연구 목적과 질문의 설정은 여성 복수 이야기에서 동기와 내러티브 패턴, 결과에 대한 심층적인 탐색으로 이어졌다. 분석의 핵심은 2000년 이후 이러한 내러티브 패턴의 변화를 보여주면서 한국 TV 드라마의 피해 단계와 복수 단계를 분석하는 것에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 연구 결과, 여성 인물에 대한 묘사는 전통적인 이진법의 대립에서 보다 복잡하고 강력한 형태로 전환되었다. 또한, 이 연구는 개인의 저항과 더 넓은 사회적 문제의 상호 결합, 그리고 현재 사회문화적 맥락에서 이러한 내러티브의 한계를 탐구한다. 종합적으로 본 논문은 2000년 이후 한국 드라마 에서 나타난 여성 복수 주제 묘사의 중요한 변화를 종합적으로 제시한다. 이러한 이야기들은 젠더와 권력에 대한 사회적 태도 변화를 반영할 뿐만 아니라 이러한 변화에 크게 기여하고 있다. 이러한 변화의 중요성은 미디어학의 영역을 훨씬 넘어 현대 사회의 여성 역할과 재현에 대한 문화적 논의에 지대한 통찰과 시사점을 제공한다.
