Orientalism and Cold War Neutrality : The Korean War in Swedish Travelogues

초록/요약

This thesis explores the Korean War from the perspective of the Swedish participants. Seen through the framework of orientalism, it more specifically investigates how the Swedish participants perceived Korea and the Korean people. By utilizing Swedish travelogues written in two different eras, pre-WWII and in the Korean War period, a pattern of orientalist prejudice can be identified. In the former era ideas of racial superiority over the Korean people, here defined as scientific orientalism, is clearly present. In the Korean War era, scientific orientalism is hardly present. Ideas of cultural superiority over the Korean people, here defined as cultural orientalism can however be found in both eras. The decline in scientific orientalism but the persistence of cultural orientalism can partially be explained by the general decline of scientific racism since the 1930s, but must also be understood in the context of Swedish neutrality and the Cold War. As the US approach towards potential allies during the Cold War was racial equality and cultural unity, it naturally contributed to the decline of scientific orientalism but opened up for persisting cultural orientalism. Sweden remained neutral during the Korean War, but as it feared USSR expansionism and the spread of communism, it had a clear preference for the creation of a US-friendly Korean state. As Sweden was clearly aligned with the US side in the Korean War, the perspective of the Swedish participants must also be understood in the context of the Korean people as a potential Western-friendly ally.
