Impact of Immigrant’s cultural identification on acculturation in South Korea : Exploratory analysis of host culture attitudes as a moderator

This research thesis examined the role of cultural identifications in predicting acculturative stress in South Korea. Regression analyses were carried out to investigate if immigrants’ respective identification with ethnic and host culture will alter the levels of acculturative stress experienced during acculturation in South Korea. A total of 223 participants took part in an online survey and despite no significant interactions found between the main study variables, an exploratory moderation analysis was carried out additionally to examine if there is a moderating effect of perceived host acceptance in predicting acculturative stress. Results showed that the more an immigrant identifies with South Korean culture, the less acculturative stress they will experience. But this result did not hold for identification with their own ethnic culture. Through testing for moderation effects of host culture attitudes, an overall significant effect was seen where the perception of acceptance from the South Korean society predicts acculturative stress. This pattern is held when considering both host culture and ethnic culture identifications implying that the role of perceived host acceptance plays an important role in acculturation, especially in South Korea. All in all, this study also found evidence that a host culture identity is indispensable when assessing acculturation experience for immigrants living in here and other indicators of acculturation from the perspective of the host, such as perceived host acceptance, are worth considering in order to understand the impact of cultural identification on acculturative stress among immigrants.

본 연구는 한국에서의 문화 적응 스트레스를 예측하는 데 있어 문화적 정체성의 역할을 조사하였다. 이민자가 민족 문화와 주류 문화에 대해 동일시하는 것이 한국 문화 적응 과정에서 경험하는 적응 스트레스 수준에 영향을 미치는지를 조사하기 위해 회귀 분석을 수행하였다. 총 223명의 참여자가 온라인 설문조사에 참여하였다. 주요 변수 간에 유의한 상호작용이 나타나지 않았음에도 불구하고, 적응 스트레스를 예측하는 데 있어 지각된 주류문화 수용의 매개 효과가 있는지 알아보기 위해 탐색적 조절 분석을 추가로 수행하였다. 그 결과, 이민자가 한국 문화와 동일시할수록 적응 스트레스를 덜 경험하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 이 결과는 자기 민족 문화에 대한 동일시에서는 확인되지 않았다. 주류 문화 태도의 조절 분석 결과, 한국 사회로부터의 수용에 대한 인식이 적응 스트레스를 예측하는 데 전반적으로 유의한 효과를 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 패턴은 주류 문화와 민족 문화 동일시 모두를 고려했을 때 유지되었으며, 이는 특히 한국에서 지각된 주류 문화 수용이 문화 적응에 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 시사한다. 종합하면, 본 연구는 한국 거주 이민자의 적응 경험을 평가할 때 주류 문화 정체성에 대한 고려가 필수적이며, 주류 문화 관점에서의 다른 적응 지표(예, 주류 문화 수용성)도 이민자의 문화 적응 스트레스에 문화적 동일시가 미치는 영향을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 수 있다는 증거를 확인하였다.
