The Development and Relationship between Ethnic and Vocational Identity of Multicultural Emerging Adults in Korea

The present study aimed to explore the development and relationship between ethnic and vocational identity of multicultural emerging adults in Korea. Based on social cognitive career theory(SCCT), this study examined if the multicultural background has a relationship with career development of multicultural emerging adults. A total number of 48 multicultural college students in Korea joined the survey, and 51 Korean college students were collected as a comparison group to identify the uniqueness of multicultural participants. Due to the small sample size, additional semi-structured interview was conducted with 3 multicultural participants. The results of the study are as follow. First, ethnic identity of multicultural emerging adults was found more developed than their vocational identity. Second, vocational identity took up a larger part of ego identity than ethnic identity among multicultural emerging adults. Ethnic identity showed no relationship with neither vocational identity nor ego identity. Third, ethnic identity could not predict vocational identity for multicultural emerging adults. In general, multicultural participants showed a similar pattern on identity development with Korean participants. It was demonstrated through interviews that multicultural emerging adults who were born and lived in Korea tend to perceive themselves as Koreans rather than minorities. Furthermore, multicultural emerging adults cited career as the most important issue and interest in their current life. They reported that their ethnic background was no longer an issue compared to when they were younger. Based on these findings, limitations of the present study, suggestions for future research, and implications for counselors and researchers were discussed. This study has implications in that it attempted to study the development of multicultural emerging adults in Korea and raised a question about how the society views multicultural individuals in Korea.

초록/요약

본 연구는 한국 다문화 대학생의 민족 정체성과 진로정체성의 발달과 관계를 탐색하기 위하여 진행되었다. 본 연구는 사회인지진로이론에 기반하여, 다문화가정 대학생 자녀들의 다문화 배경이 진로 발달과 관련이 있는지를 확인하고자 하였다. 총 48명의 다문화 대학생이 설문에 참여하였고, 51명의 한국 대학생들을 비교집단으로 모집하여 본 연구결과가 다문화 대학생의 고유특성인지 검증하였다. 모집된 설문 표본의 수가 작아, 3명의 다문화 참여자들과 함께 반구조화 인터뷰를 추가적으로 실시하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다문화 대학생들의 민족정체성은 진로정체성보다 더 발달되어 있는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 다문화 대학생들의 진로정체성은 민족정체성보다 전체적인 자아정체성에 차지하는 비중이 더 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 민족정체성은 진로정체성 및 자아정체성과 상관이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 다문화 대학생들의 민족정체성은 진로정체성을 예측하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 전반적으로 다문화 대학생들은 한국인 대학생들과 유사한 정체성 발달 양상을 보였다. 인터뷰를 통해, 한국에서 태어나고 자란 다문화가족 대학생 자녀들은 자신을 소수자보다는 한국인으로 인식하는 것으로 나타났다. 다문화 대학생들은 현재 자신의 삶에서 가장 중요한 이슈이자 관심사로 진로를 꼽았으며, 민족 배경은 어릴 적에 비해 크게 문제되지 않는다고 보고하였다. 이러한 연구결과를 토대로, 본 연구의 한계점과, 향후 연구에 대한 제언, 그리고 상담자와 연구자에 대한 시사점을 논의하였다. 본 연구는 한국 다문화가정 대학생 자녀들의 발달에 대한 연구를 시도했다는 점과 한국사회가 다문화인을 어떻게 바라보고 있는지에 대한 질문을 제기했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
