The Effects of Health Behavior on Chronic Diseases in Workers : With a focus on the mediating effects of health status Name: Tan-young Yang Department: Department of Health Policy & Management Thesis Advisor: Seok-Jun Yoon The purpose of this study is to analyze how the health status of workers played a moderating role on the effects of their health behavior on chronic diseases. For this purpose, the study used the primitive data of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2019 by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency in its analysis. Using the SPSS and AMOS statistical programs, the researcher conducted a test for reliability and validity and analyzed overall causal relationships. The findings show that life habits and drinking patterns under health behaviors had statistically significant positive (+) and negative (-) effects on chronic diseases, respectively. Life habits, patterns of quitting smoking, and drinking under health behaviors had statistically significant positive (+) effects on health status, which in turn had statistically significant negative (-) effects on chronic diseases. The study analyzed the mediating effects of health status on the impact of health behaviors on chronic diseases and found that health status played partial mediating roles in the impact of life habits on chronic diseases, full mediating roles on the impact of patterns of quitting smoking on chronic diseases, and partial mediating roles on the impact of drinking patterns on chronic diseases. These findings have the following policy and practical implications: first, the findings imply that life habits (physical activities of moderate intensity or higher, number of walking days per week, and mental health management) under the health behaviors of workers can be the causes of chronic diseases, which raises a need for workers to learn healthy life habits. Workers can also prevent chronic diseases by developing appropriate drinking patterns. There should be active promotions about the correlation between drinking and chronic diseases at the national level so that a culture of quitting drinking or appropriate drinking can be instilled; second, the usual health behaviors of workers had positive effects on their health status, which raises a need for workers to make healthy life habits (physical activities), no smoking, and moderation in drinking; third, those who have a high usual health status level tend to record lower possibilities of contracting chronic diseases; finally, it is important to establish the right health behaviors to prevent chronic diseases, but it is critical for workers to maximize their health status to prevent chronic diseases. In other words, workers need to make efforts to keep their health status at a high level along with the right health behaviors (life habits, no smoking, and drinking patterns) to prevent chronic diseases. The study has its share of limitations as it could not conduct an empirical analysis due to COVID-19. A follow-up study will need to conduct more profound research with in-depth interviews and diverse panel data about the age, gender, occupation, and type of employment of workers. Keywords: health behavior, chronic disease, health status
