초록/요약
Literacy skills are the fundamental skills for success in schools and society, however, there is a large number of students who are illiterate in Uganda in both their first language and English which is their second language. As a result, it causes low achievement in classes and brings a high rate of repetition and dropout. Regarding this situation, the importance of Early Childhood Care Education (ECCE) has been recognized, since the positive effects of ECCE on literacy skills development have been shown in many previous studies. Therefore, following the previous studies, this study focuses on a relationship between students’ pre-primary school attendance and their literacy level in both their first language and English by using the Ordinary Least Square (OLS) model. Adding to that, it focuses on a relationship between students’ literacy level in their first language and their level in English based on the translanguaging theory. As a result, this study finds that there is a positive and significant effect of ECCE on literacy skills development in both languages overall Adding to that, the importance of reading books to children in households and the mother’s education level and the female-headed household is found from the results. This study contributes to being aware of the importance of ECCE and encourages the Ugandan government to investigate more on it as a policy recommendation.
