Gender Gaps and Predictors of Life Satisfaction within South Korea’s Older Adult Population

초록/요약

This study examines gender differences in older adult life satisfaction and its associated factors using wave 7 (2018) of the Korea Longitudinal Study of Ageing (KLoSA). Using multiple regression, this study finds that a gender gap exists in South Korean older adult life satisfaction. Older women are found to have lower levels of life satisfaction than men. Gender is a predictor of life satisfaction mainly through the channels of education, income, and marital status. Women are less endowed with education and income, and are more likely to suffer from widowhood. However, women are able to partly compensate for their endowment gaps with higher resilience when facing poverty, loneliness, and poor health.
