Development of a semantic differential scale for AI agents and its application in music recommendation services

This study aimed to develop a comprehensive measurement scale that analyzes a human's attitude toward Artificial Intelligence (AI) agents by employing a semantic differential scale. Despite increasing interactions with AI agents, previous studies have focused on measuring objective functionality without considering subjective users' experiences with AI agents. Semantic differential scales were employed as the measurement model to evaluate the multi-dimensional concepts of human attitudes toward AI agents. The online survey for essay one was conducted by a professional online survey agency from October 15 to 19, 2021. Fifty-five bipolar adjective pairs were presented to 561 respondents, and a total of 517 samples were used for the final analysis after excluding undependable respondents. The result show that respondents' attitudes toward AI agents consist of six factors: Intelligence, Activity, Expressiveness, Usability, Mood, and Naturalness. Essay two has attempted to elaborate the developed semantic differential scales of essay one by applying them to AI music recommendation services. The online survey of essay two was conducted from May 2 to 9, 2022. The result demonstrates the image of AI music recommendation services in terms of Performance, Mood, and Serendipity. This study contributes to research on users of AI agents by providing a comprehensive tool to investigate their attitudes toward AI agents. It sheds light on the identification and construction of evaluation criteria for AI agents.
