Production type, managerial overconfidence and inventory turnaround time

초록/요약

Production model may be influenced by bounded rationality and cognitive biases. Many literature discusses the impact of different production model on inventory time, however little attention has been paid to the mediating role of managers' behavioral decisions in the impact of production modes on inventory time. In view of this, this paper intervenes managerial overconfidence into the discussion based on upper echelon theory. The impact of production model and managerial overconfidence on inventory time is examined with data from 140,000 packaging material firms. The empirical results find that there are significant differences in the effects of different production model on inventory time. The effect of managerial overconfidence on inventory time also differs under different inventory paths. Overconfidence under some paths leads to an increase in inventory time; while in other cases, overconfidence leads to a decrease in inventory time. Compared with the existing literature, this paper is innovative in two aspects: (1) managerial overconfidence is embedded in operation management theory, and the theoretical influence mechanism of "production model-manager overconfidence-inventory time" is constructed, which expands the research perspective of production model and inventory management. (1) The research perspective of production model and inventory management is expanded by constructing a theoretical mechanism of "production model-manager overconfidence-inventory time". (2) The mediating effect of managerial overconfidence on production model and inventory time is modeled and empirically tested, which provides empirical evidence for production model selection and inventory management in production-oriented firms.
