A study on the elementary school students’ academic achievement trajectories and the affecting factors on the latent profiles : using growth mixture modeling

This study aimed to longitudinally investigate the trajectories of academic achievement in elementary school students and explore the influencing factors on those trajectories. Using data from the 8th to 11th (2015–2018) from Panel Study on Korean Children, growth mixture modeling was applied to identify the changes in children’s academic achievement trajectories and the influential factors on the latent groups. The results demonstrated that the latent profiles were classified into the following four groups based on the elementary school students’ academic achievement trajectories, which were a decreasing group (12.8%), a low-level maintenance group (6.3%), an increasing group (18.4%), and a high-level maintenance group (62.4%). Also, the results showed that school adjustment, self-esteem, and family income had significant positive impacts on the high-level group, and school adjustment, self-esteem, and father's educational level affected positively the increasing group. However, those factors had a negative impact on the low-level maintenance group. This article concludes with discussions on the implication of promoting academic achievement in elementary school students.
