Borrowing of English Compound Words into Russian : Focused on Muilt-Word Lexemes

초록/요약

This paper demonstrates that a group of borrowed words from English into Russian forms syntactic constructions of Adjective+Noun, Noun+Adjective, and Noun+Noun. Multi-word units, formed as a result of borrowing, should be classified as neologisms. For example, the left stem of the lexeme дорожная карта 'roadmap' is a native word, whereas the right stem – a calque from 18th century. However, when the lexeme as a whole means 'plan', the expression is a neologism, formed by secondary borrowing in the 20th century. Also, this paper argues that the concept of 'compound word' is accepted differently among English and Russian linguists. In Russian, compounds are written as one word or connected with a hyphen. Whereas in English, there exist open compounds, i.e. multi-word units with space. As a result, black box is regarded as a compound and its Russian counterpart чёрный ящик classified as collocation or even an idiom, although they have the same semantic and syntactic construction. This type of multi-word expression differs from collocations or phraseological units. The author argues that Russian and English multi-word units have similarities and differences, and demonstrate the possibility of reinterpretation of Russian multi-word lexemes as compounds.
