Autonomous Networking for Web Quality of Experience

Over the past several decades, Web technologies have been used ubiquitously in our daily lives to realize various Internet-connected applications. Beyond the traditional hypertext-based ones, the Web evolution now reaches the new emerging applications, which makes it more challenging to achieve better Web quality of experience (QoE) perceived by users while browsing those advanced Web applications. To maximize this Web QoE, autonomous networking has been in the spotlight as a promising strategy. In spite of the previous research efforts on autonomous networking at endpoint, three fundamental aspects still remains immature: autonomous optimization of Web QoE regardless of target application or user's intention and context, in-depth analysis of actual user perception on Web browsing performance, and verification in practical Web environments for its sustainable use. This dissertation explores autonomous networking for Web QoE in terms of autonomicity, measurablity, and evolvability. To this end, we propose novel profiling and prefetching mechanisms for Web applications based on user interaction. To grasp user's browsing behaviors and future actions over general Web applications, we graft a data-driven approach based on user interaction and a predictive approach from machine learning together. We then analyze the performance gains from our autonomous networking technology for Web browsing by investigating various QoE metrics and their correlations extensively. Finally, it is emulated and evaluated in accordance with real Web browsers, which validates the feasibility and stability against the future evolution of Web technologies. In the former part, we address the problem of user interaction prediction for Web applications. User interaction prediction for Web applications is crucial to improve browsing experience. With the prediction, for instance, a browser can prefetch the content to be accessed next reducing long wait times in advance. However, predicting the user interaction is challenging in practice. Collecting detailed interaction data is difficult due to the constraints on target application and platform. Moreover, Web navigation prediction mechanisms for general applications have a low accuracy with conventional machine learning models. As a remedy, we propose a Web interaction profiling framework, WebProfiler, which collects user interaction data in a generic way and accurately predicts the next navigation. Both navigation and click events are collected by using JavaScript event handlers and clicked objects are identified reliably through a document object model based approach. Furthermore, we adopt gated recurrent unit (GRU), a representative deep learning technique suitable for coping with time series Web interaction data, and present two advanced techniques for training the GRU-based model: uniform resource locator (URL) grouping to handle the variant URLs of a Web page and Web embedding to represent both events in a unified vector space. The experimental results based on the real user interaction data showed that click events within an application improved the overall prediction performance, which were overlooked by most of the previous research. In addition, our evaluation results demonstrated that WebProfiler can achieve a sufficient level of prediction performance for practical use considering its accuracy and feasibility. In the latter part, we cover the Web prefetching problem and consequent effects on user-perceived QoE. Web prefetching is a key technology to hide network latencies from users. Conventional prefetching methods, however, misconstrue the purpose of user's browsing behaviors and resulting experience due to their dependence on statistical characteristics or metadata of individual Web applications. To mitigate existing limitations, we propose a predictive prefetching scheme, WebPrefetcher, which utilizes interaction events to decipher user's genuine intention and context. Our intensive performance analysis results obtained with a real Web browser demonstrate that WebPrefetcher improves user-perceived quality of experience noticeably, outperforming competitive models.
