셰익스피어 4대 비극 속 언어 표현을 통해 본 감정과 뇌의 반응 관계에 관한 연구

초록/요약

William Shakespeare, considered the greatest English poet and playwright of all time, describes various human emotions through his remarkable use of direct and indirect poetic language in the conversations or monologues of his characters. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the five emotions of hopelessness, anxiety, anger, revenge, and guilt described through language expression in Shakespeare's four major tragedies - Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth – in terms of Psychology and Brain Science perspective. The study identifies the five emotions expressed through dialogues in four tragedies, defines emotions from Psychology perspective, and investigates the brain’s reaction to these emotions from Brain Science perspective. Furthermore, it examines Psychology and Brain Science studies on the diseases that can occur if these emotions intensify. The following is a summary of the five emotions in Shakespeare’s work and the responses in the brain triggered by these emotions. First, the thesis discusses hopelessness and depression through the language expression of Hamlet, Othello, Lear, and Macbeth and examines what reactions that occur in the brain. Second, this study examines anxiety and anxiety disorders through Claudius, Othello, Lear, Goneril, and Macbeth’s discourses and the hormones that cause anxiety in the brain. Third, the study describes anger and anger disorders through the script of Hamlet, Othello, Lear, and Macduff and identifies how the brain controls the emotion of anger. Fourth, the thesis explores revenge and post-traumatic embitterment disorder through the dialogue situations of Hamlet, Laertes, Othello, Lear, Duke of Albany, and Macduff and demonstrates the relationship between revenge and pleasure through experiments using brain imaging techniques. Finally, the thesis focuses on guilt and obsessive-compulsive disorder through the discourse situations of Claudius, Othello, Lear, Gloucester, Goneril, Macbeth, and Lady Macbeth and observes reactions of neurohormones and brain functions. In Psychology, testing tools have been developed and used to determine and measure the extent of these emotions and diseases. Also, in Brain Science, the works of neurohormones and areas that control emotions, such as the frontal lobe and amygdala, have been demonstrated through experiments using brain imaging techniques such as fMRI, PET, EEG, and brain scans. Shakespeare well described the complex psychology into his lines of Hamlet, who is constantly conflicted between his father's revenge and his life; Othello, who doubts his wife's innocence; King Lear, who suffers from the banishment of Cordelia and abandonment by his two daughters; and Macbeth, who desires power. By connecting emotions described through the linguistic expressions of literary works with Psychology and Brain Science, this study has been able to break down the academic boundaries of Linguistics, Psychology, and Brain Science and presents a potential application of this approach in convergence research.
