Visual Effects on EFL Reading Comprehension

Visual Effects on EFL Reading Comprehension

초록/요약

This study investigates the use of visual images in EFL reading materials, and proposes that providing students with more illustrated materials is a means to facilitate learners’ reading comprehension. The impetus for the study comes from diverse sources that suggest the power of visual images in text comprehension. Each group took two tests in which they were asked to translate the texts word by word. For the first test, group A was given the text on juggling with pictures, while group B was given the text without pictures. For the second test, group A was given the text on dream catchers without pictures, and group B was given the text with pictures. The study’s results demonstrate that the reading comprehension of the participating Korean EFL learners was significantly affected by the presence of pictures with a text. The learners translated reading passages accompanied with pictures significantly better than they translated reading passages without pictures. For all the learners, the translation exam with pictures facilitated more accurate translation.
