초록/요약
This study explores the translation shifts of patriarchal ideology in the news articles from The Dong-A Ilbo and The Hankyoreh on ʻcomfort womenʼ issues. It examines how the Korean versions of the two newspapers present nationalistic patriarchal ideology and how it is translated into English texts. It uses feminist theories and Faircloughʼs critical discourse analysis. This study deals with the identity, past experience, and present situation of the 'comfort women'. It finds that ʻcomfort womenʼ are represented as inferior Others and used as means of evoking sympathy and hostility towards Japan. This study examines the reproduction, elimination, and transformation of patriarchal nationalism in the English translated texts. The findings of this study suggest that many ideological shifts occur in the translation process, which demonstrates that the translators eliminate and transform patriarchal nationalism underlying the Korean texts.
