초록/요약
This paper explores grammaticalization of modals in three different languages, Chinese ‘要’, English ‘must’ and Korean ‘-keyss-’ and investigates commonalities and differences in their grammaticalization paths, particularly with respect to their source meanings and diachronic semantic development. These three modals may not be equivalent to each other. However, they share the meaning of probability, despite the different degree of certainty they convey, and thus provide indicator of human cognition for modals based on force dynamics (Talmy 1976) and futurity. This paper discusses ‘要’, ‘must’, and ‘-keyss-’, with special focus on the concept of ‘external force’ and compares 要 with -keyss-, based on futurity (103 words).
