초록/요약
This study deals with Chinese writer Qian Zhong-shu’s writing. He is one of the writers who are importantly mentioned when we discuss the literary history of the 1940s. As a matter of fact, he is not only a writer but also a very learned scholar of all ages and cultures. Due to this broad knowledge and thought, his writing also has various implications that can not be easily read. Fortress Besieged, a novel focused on in this study, is also one of his outstanding works. This novel describes various aspects of characters in Shanghai of the war time and distorts the society of that time with his own unique writing style at the same time. Because of this reason, the novel has been generally dealt with from the satirical aspect. But the novel may contain his thinking system of ‘the marginal man’, beyond a simple satire. What is the inside and the outside; who is the subject and the Other; how is the past and the present organized; what demarcates those boundaries? Fortress Besieged may also imply a possibility of the postcolonial reading. This reading of text can be another methodology that can understand complexity and diversity of Qian Zhong-shu.
