A New Past of Choson Rediscovered : The Case of Im Sangdok in Late Choson

This paper focuses on the way Im Sangd?k (林象德 1683~ 1719), who came from the Young Disciples (少論) in late Chosen. reconstructed a discourse of continuity in ancient Korea. Specifically, I place great emphasis on how Im made Tan’gun, Kija, and the ensuing polities run in a row, thereby turning their geographical. cultural, and ethnic diversities into a unilineal form of history and to conjure up a transhistorical space in ancient Korea. What should not go unnoticed is the fact that Im also strove to delete or revise the non-Confucian, or uncivilized elements of these historical entities according to the Cheng-Zhuist historiography (綱目體). Both the reformulation of continuity and the construction of a Confucianism-oriented past enabled Im to carve out a co-spatiality, where the historical space of ancient Chosen and the territory of late Chos?n came to converge, and fortify the discourse on ‘Confucian Civilization of Chos?n’ (小中華). This approach will help us to understand Im’s new interpretation of the past and the development of the historiography written by the Young Disciples within the context of late Chosen.
