This paper aims to analyze the lexical features of editorial texts in Korean daily newspapers compared with texts of report articles. The data are the morphological component of the Trends 21 Corpus, which include texts of four major Korean newspapers of Donga, Chosun, Joongang, and Hankyoreh. In this study, we use only articles published in 2009. First, we extract the keywords by comparing the frequencies of words in editorials with the frequencies of words in report articles (log likelihood ratio). From the editorial texts, we also analyse concordance lines and collocations for some keywords. In editorials, we find some characteristic linguistic features such as: words/morphemes expressing obligation (-eoya/ -aya), adjective with negative flavor such as simgakha- ‘be serious’, assertive adjectives with meaning “be correct, be right, be natural”, past-denoting words eoje ‘yesterday’ and geuje ‘the day before yesterday’, and many political words such as gukmin ‘people’, jeongbu ‘government’. Other lexical features, including intensifying adverbs like mullon ‘of course’, are identified and discussed, too. The significance of this study is that a more objective analysis based on more comprehensive corpus data is sought.
