A Study of Wunju Temple in Neungseong in Koryeo Dynasty

초록/요약

In Koryeo Dynasty Wunju Temple in Neungseong was comprised of a general area and a stupa-statue area of the Buddha. The stupa-statue area of the Buddha was composed of a flatland and a west and an east mountain; the flatland symbolized the human world, the west mountain symbolized the heaven of Polaris, and the east mountain symbolized that of Canopus. The statues of three Buddhas symbolized Polaris. Great Dipper was made up of the seven-star stones and a seven-story stupa. Canopus was carved on the rock and Sagittarius consisted of a six-story stupa. There are circular stupas with the shapes of stars and patterned stupas. The patterns such as ◇ and × symbolized eight directions in which Polaris made a royal tour. The pattern of ▥ carved on the six-story stupa of the east mountain might be described a life line wishing longevity or the rain streak wishing rainfall. The amount of buddhist stupas and statues in Wunju Temple in the Naju area closely associated with the rise of Naju influence, especially with the rise of Yim family in Jangheung. The formation of the area might be inferred to be formed between the 12th century and the 13th century.
