The Fashion and Fashion Behavior of Women's Clothing Manifested in the Media from the 1920s to the 1930s -Focusing on the Social Assessment and the logic of differentiation-

초록/요약

Fashion is a modern phenomenon which reflects the collective choices and preferences of the masses, and in which we can identify the changes of the times and the society. The mass media plays a role in communicating the aspects of such changes to the multitudes, and offers the opportunities of understanding the social assessment of and response to modern fashion, and the extent of the social acceptance of fashion. This study has analyzed the articles about the clothing fashion by the mass media from the 1920s to the 1930s. Then, it has investigated the basis of the argument for differentiating females of subjectivity and the social intervention in the differentiation. The articles about the clothing fashion by the mass media from the 1920s to the 1930s had the intention to divide women in terms of subjectivity into two groups: one who led the fashion, and the other who followed the fashion. The social assessment and differentiation were made in direct relation to women's collective appearances, preferences and inclinations which were present in that era. The fashion which the female subjects chose and followed was regarded as related to their social functions and modern educational experiences. Accordingly, there immediately appeared women's discourses about their value judgment on,assessment of and intervention in their fashion behavior. Those articles clearly revealed the movement of differentiating women's functions and preferences through their choices of fashion items and the external traits of those items.
