The Underside of Modern Love: Focusing on the “Double Suicide for Love”

This paper tries to clarify the cultural phenomenon of “Double Suicide for Love” reported in the mass media such as newspaper and magazine in the early modern Korea. It is presumed that “Double Suicide for Love” which is rarely found in the pre-modern documents was influenced from the Japanese culture from the pre-modern, Edo, through Meiji to Taisho period when “Double Suicide for Love” was flourishing. And it is understood as one new trend produced in the spread of modern love and modern monogamy, which were introduced via Japan. This paper looks into the specific aspects of “Double Suicide for Love” in the early modern Joseon through the analysis of social mechanism such as class and gender which operate as a base of “Double Suicide for Love”. Furthermore, this will quest for the socio-historical meaning of “Double Suicide for Love” by examining the stream of consciousness surrounding love and death.
