This paper is to examine the formation of Korean melodrama which has been the overriding popular narrative genre. Melodrama has formed since the early modern age through compound of the introduction of 'Sinpa drama' from Japan and traditional Korean stories. And the narrative conventions of the Melodrama have worked valid even in digital narratives. So a study of Korean melodrama is not only an examination of popular narrative genre but also an inquiry into Korean modern culture. First of all, I examine the formation process of melodrama concept through investigation into newspapers and magazines which published from 1920 to 1990. I reference the melodrama play and melodrama film and pay attention to audience expectation of melodrama in those days. And I deduce Korean melodrama concept as well as taste and preference of Korean audience. Furthermore I illuminate the meaning of melodrama in Korean culture with the examination process of this paper.
