Kim Young Bae(金永培), a landed and tenant farmer in Anseong(安城), was arrested for subversive speech and behavior in 1939. He conflicted with the powers of the village who were in cooperation with the colonial power. The causes of confliction were relative poverty, the dictatorial power Abstract 521 assumed by large landowners, the violence and exploitation of colonial rule and the loss of farmer in modernization. He came into close relation with tenant farmers in his guest room where they took a rest and had fun. His witty remark was popular and contributed to the unification of farmers. Farmer’s culture in his guest room was self-regulating and oriented toward equal order. The powers of village seemed to dislike the chattering of his guest room.
