From a standpoint of traditional writings, historical essays are not just related with historical facts, but also deeply related with the field of literature. Though a number of historical essays had been produced since Koryo dynasty, its literary value hadn’t been noticed until the latter period of Chosun dynasty. Lee Chun-bo was one of noticeable writers at that time. He was prime minister of King Yongjo period, and a famous writer as well. Thus we can figure out his political view and literary characteristics. Because he tried to express his historical point of view through historical essays. It was a combination of politic and literature for him. In historical essays, he emphasized the duty of sovereign and subject. It was a important question for him. Because he had a responsibility to remonstrate with the King. On the other side, he gave careful consideration about the duty of subject as he himself was one of important subjects. He also paid attention to the relationship of sovereign and subject. This matter was so important for him. In general, one’s original thought is the most important part of historical essays. So, in the actual writings, he tried to refute common notions about historical facts or people. He used various rhetorical methods to support his main idea such as the catechetic method, the subjunctive mood and metaphorical expressions. He showed off his literary ability and also political view as well.
