초록/요약
Under the Greenwood Tree : The Aesthetic of Integration Under the Greenwood Tree (1872) is Hardy’s third but first artistically successful novel. Its material and subject suggest that it is a pastoral novel, given its singular form by a realistic picture of rural life with elegiac feeling for its dislocation. The aim of this article is to explore how pastoral, romance, and realism are combined to build its mood, tone and theme in the novel, and thereby how the novel adds itself to the quality of art and beauty. It is stressed that the rural order of stability and continuity in Victorian England, hot-wired by inexorable onslaughts of change, is forced to adjust itself to the general trend of the time, the intimation of which Hardy develops in a perceptively poetic manner.
