The Characteristic of Korean Traditional Art Philosophy Revealed in the Art Theory of the Late Chosŏn Period Kim Jai-sook [Kim Chae-suk] Though Korean aesthetic concepts were borrowed from China, a uniquely Korean aesthetic sense was well established within the Korean aesthetic sensitivity prior to the adoption of formalized therories from China. This paper examines the Chin'gyŏng 眞景 period considered to be the zenith of Korean traditional art. This paper will refer to the term Chin'gyŏng as the fundamental concept that led the development of the arts, including music and literature, painting in 18th period. The meanings of Chin'gyŏng has two philosophical background. The concept of Chin'gyŏng implies internal Ch'ŏn'gi 天機 as originated in the thought of Chuang Tzū 莊子 (Changja in Sino-Korean), and the understanding of an objective real world as expounded in Sirhak 實學 thought. They both move away from Neo-confucian thought, but do not reject it entirely. Synthetically speaking, the revelation of the Ch'ŏn'gi is the genuine art and unexhausted creation source, eventually it changed the actual world harmoniously. The characteristic of Korean traditional art philosophy revealed in the art theory in the late Chosŏn period is the spirit of golden mean and moderation.
