초록/요약
This study aims to analyze the effects of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows on human capital accumulation in developing countries in Asia. Scholars have debated whether FDIs contribute to develop human capital. Although the inward FDI into the developing countries in Asia has rapidly increased, studies about the effects of FDIs on educational attainment in this region are limited. In order to analyze the effects of FDI on human capital accumulation, the study applies the Fixed Effects OLS Estimation and the Generalized-Method-of-Moments (GMM) Estimation. This regression analysis uses a panel data on thirty-eight Asian countries in five Asian sub-regions, which covers a period of forty-seven years (1971-2018). The empirical results show that FDI has a statistically positive effect on the school life expectancy and school enrollment ratios. In addition to this, the empirical result also reveals that the scale of the impacts of FDI on school enrollment ratios differ depending on the country’s economic condition. Especially in the Least Developed Countries, the lagged FDI inflows is significantly and positively linked with human capital accumulation. The findings are significant in the sense that it contributes to fill in the research gap by expanding the number of samples and human capital indicators.
