Xunzi’s (荀子) Educational Thought: Focusing on Internal Grounds and External Standards of Education

This study aims to explain the internal grounds and external standards of Xunzi’s (荀子) educational philosophy as well as to derive educational practice content and methods from his work. The study is structured around the following three questions. First, if humans are not born inherently moral, from where does the ability to achieve morality come? Second, how can li (禮 or “normative standards”), as an external standard of education, be justified? Finally, what does a deliberate effort to realize and internalize morality entail? In Xunzi’s philosophy, shan e (善惡 or “goodness and badness”) is not absolute or a priori but a social concept. Neither is xing e (性惡 or “human nature is bad”) is inevitable. Thus, if xing (性 or “human nature”) is disregarded and neglected, it will tend to evolve in undesirable directions. Therefore, Xunzi acknowledges the human ability to learn or educability. In this regard, hua xing (化性 or “to transform human nature”), the process of directing the natural tendency of human nature toward a socially desirable state, corresponds with the purpose of education. Further, qi wei/zuo wei (起僞/作僞 or “to establish deliberate effort”) is an intentional and conscious endeavor comparable to the practice of education. Ji xi (積習 or “to accumulate habits”) is the process of establishing desirable behavioral patterns through the conscious acquirement of new modes of behavior. Thus, education is a universal concept because individuals can change or acquire new behaviors. Furthermore, the accumulation of desirable behavior patterns requires repetitive efforts. In terms of education, it is essential that educators create environments in which learners can imitate desirable acts; learners should make continuous efforts to acquire these habits. The internal grounds of education can be explained through the understanding of the self. Xing is a natural and non-artificially processed material; it varies depending on the process. Qing (情 or “emotion”), however, is a natural reaction to external stimuli that can lead to reactions such as desire and act as a source of lu (慮 or “thoughts”). Yu (欲 or “desire”) is a response to external stimuli that can have negative consequences. Excessive yu must be adequately controlled as it can be degrading. Xin (心 or “heart/mind”) is the basis of recognition and perception and directs the sense organs without being ordered from other agencies. This understanding of the inner self can inform educational practices based on internal grounds as follows. First, the cognitive activity of the xin is the primary basis of moral achievement. Humans do not possess a priori morality but can perceive a morally appropriate system. Second, qing elevates morality and internalizes moral values. The natural discrimination ability of qing provides the basis for cognitive discrimination. Qing is also a motive that seeks the moral and excludes the immoral. Third, yu can provide an internal source that drives moral action when regulated. Unlike the internal grounds of education, the external standards of education can be investigated within a framework that justifies li (禮). Li is the result of deliberate efforts over a long period of time; although it can evolve, its core remains unchanging. These normative standards are enacted by outstanding pioneers (聖王·先王) and passed on by the helpers of the later generations (後王·師). During its establishment, li is justifiable because it helps human beings overcome xing and become part of community life. Humans are able to perform a variety of actions in accordance with li, including resolving conflict, developing an ethical consciousness, and creating a governing system. However, although Xunzi believed that anyone could live as a sage (聖人), he maintained that very few individuals were capable of said achievement. Consequently, knowledge—or educational content—can only be confirmed by the few people who can participate in the formation and transfer of li. Such education inevitably exhibits authoritarian features. Conversely, transferred li must adapt to the current times and be justified in the process. The existing norms are universal and can be transformed into a form suitable for the modern age. Subsequent kings (後王) and educators (師) provide the external assistance needed to recognize external morality. By preaching the reign of the former kings (先王), these later kings ensure that former rulings are carried into later generations. A teacher is someone who understands how to achieve desired educational outcomes and identifies effective education methods through cultivating him/herself. By following these kings and teachers, we can recognize the essence of culture more easily. The practice of education can be explained by definite methods of deception. As a method of moral recognition through the xin, deception is associated with jie bi (解蔽 or “undoing fixation”), xu (虛 or “emptiness”), yi (壹 or “single-mindedness”), and jing (靜 or “stillness”). First, jie bi (解蔽) is the act of eliminating obstacles that obstruct cognition and providing a background for judgment. To overcome the errors of recognition, a person’s level of sensitivity and desires should be regulated and comprehensive judgment should be made. Second, xu (虛) is the act of increasing one’s tolerance levels by actively preventing the input of new information from being disturbed by existing information. Third, yi (壹) refers to the process of concentrating on a particular entity. Finally, an attitude of jing (靜) prevents unnecessary movements of the xin by stabilizing and calming sensory and cognitive functions. One can embody morality through emotion by means of yi li (儀禮 or “ritual”) and yue (樂 or “music”). A good ritual equips a person’s outer form and also produces moral emotion in the form of structure. Moreover, rituals function to regulate emotions and prevent them from reaching extremes. Those who play music internalize a moral mind and conduct through the process of attending to sound and movement. Further, music helps refine and direct the emotions of an audience.
