The Effect of Core Pilates Exercise on Lumbar Muscles and Anthropometric Variables of Middle-aged Women with Abdominal Obesity

초록/요약

The purpose of this study is to scientifically verify the effectiveness of Core Pilates exercise program for middle-aged women with abdominal obesity by their lumbar muscles and anthropometric variables. The subjects of the study were middle-aged women with abdominal obesity in the full age of 40 to 53 before menopause. A total of 18 subjects were classified into 9 women with Core Pilates Exercise (Core Pilates Group) and 9 other women without exercise(Control Group). Tests on lumbar muscle strength and anthropometric variables for abdominal obesity were conducted before and after 8-week Core Pilates Exercise Program which was practiced 3 times a week and 60 minutes each time. Windows PASW Statistics/PC Ver.18 statistical program was used to calculate mean and standard deviation for each variable earned from the experiment. Paired T-test was performed to investigate the differences before and after exercise in a same group and to investigate the differences between the two groups(Core Pilates Group and Control Group), Independent T-test was performed. All statistical significance levels were α= 0.05. The subsequent results were as follows; 1. Changes in lumbar muscle strength 1) Changes in maximum extension lumbar muscle strength per unit weight by the application of Core Pilates exercise increased significantly (p<0.01), and Control Group decreased significantly(p<0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups only after exercise(p<0.001). 2) Changes in maximum flexion lumbar muscle strength per unit weight by the application of Core Pilates exercise increased significantly (p<0.01), and Control Group decreased significantly(p<0.001). There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups only after exercise(p<0.001). 2. Changes in Anthropometric Variables for Abdomianl Obesity 1) Changes in waist circumference, waist circumference and height ratio in the Core Pilates Exercise Group decreased significantly (p<0.01), there was no statistically significant difference between waist circumference and hip circumference ratio, but the mean value was reduced. Control Group showed no significant differences in waist circumference, waist circumference and hip circumference ratio, and waist circumference and height ratio. There was a significant difference between the two groups after exercise in the waist circumference and height ratio(p<0.01). To sum up above results, 8-week Core Pilates exercise had positive effects on lumbar muscle strength and anthropometric variables for abdominal obesity. It can be seen that Core Pilates exercise is effective in preventing muscle and skeletal disorders that can be caused by abdominal obesity and metabolic diseases caused by abdominal obesity.
