Development of Polysulfone based Mixed Matrix Membrane for Effective CO₂ Separation

In this work, zeolitic imidazole framework 8 (ZIF-8) and amine-functionalized ZIF-8 (ZIF8-A) with 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole (Atz) were prepared and they were used as inorganic fillers in the polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafted polysulfone (PSF) matrices, PSF-g-PEG, matrices to fabricate MMMs (ZIF-8/PSF-g-PEG and ZIF8-A/PSF-g-PEG) with the ZIF loading of 20 wt%. ZIF-8 or ZIF8-A particles were well-dispersed into the PSF-g-PEG matrices compared to the pristine PSF owing to their good compatibility with the polymer chain. For the ZIF8-A/PSF-g-PEG MMMs, the Atz contents in ZIF8-A were tuned by controlling the reaction time of the ligand exchange of 2-methylimidazole with Atz through postsynthetic modification. Gas permeation properties of CO2, N2, and CH4 over ZIF-8/PSF-g-PEG and ZIF8-A/PSF-g-PEG MMMs were measured using time-lag method at 35 oC and 1 bar. Permeation measurements on the gases demonstrated that the incorporation of ZIF8-A with high Atz content can improve the CO2 permeability as well as separation factors of CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 compare to the pristine PSF polymer and ZIF-8/PSF-g-PEG MMMs.
