THE MORE EDUCATED YOU ARE, THE HAPPIER LIFE YOU LIVE?

초록/요약

This study investigates effects of education years on life satisfaction, which includes direct and indirect effects through income. For this investigation, I exploited Ordered Probit with 15 countries’ cross-section data sets from European Social Survey (ESS) in 2008. In addition, since it has to be considered that life satisfaction could have an effect on education, parents’ education levels are used as instrumental variables to solve the endogeneity problem. According to the estimation result, without income effect, education years has an insignificant or negative effect on life satisfaction in most countries. However, with income effect, countries show different results and this outcome is positively related to Gini coefficient from each country. This implies that education effect including income channel varies according to countries’ economic situation.
