Literature and Medicine in Chekhov

초록/요약

It is well known that Chekhov was a doctor in the nineteenth century in Russia. As a doctor, he was deeply interested in medical science, especially in psychiatry. Nonetheless, due to the greatness of his literary works, the significance of Chekhov as a doctor has been overlooked to this day. In this regard, this paper is focused on examining Chekhov as a doctor in detail, and subsequently analyzing the correlation between his understanding of medicine and literature by revisiting his two literary works of An Attack of Nerves(1888) and The Black Monk(1893). In the late nineteenth century, Degeneration theory wielded its strong influence over the field of psychiatry. Theorists like Benedict Morel and Max Nordau argued that human beings of Fin-de-siècle are degenerating, and many cases of mental illness are caused by hereditary factors. Chekhov took a negative stance on this theory, which is largely based on a deterministic view of human nature. Instead, he appreciated that mental illness is a curable disease, which is not caused by heredity but an inappropriate social environment. An Attack of Nerves and The Black Monk adequately represent Chekhov’s perspective on degeneration theory and mental illness. These two novels have in common that the main character of each novel suffers a mental illness. By vividly depicting the main character’s illness and the course of treatment which ends in failure, Chekhov evokes the dignity of human individuality and points out unethical treatment practices of his day. The nature of medicine and literature is to listen to the suffering of others. To Chekhov, his acts of writing and treating patients were fundamentally the same. Namely, he was the dedicated, responsible and humanistic doctor, as well as the great writer in Russia.
