North Korean Socio-Economic Change : Cross Comparison with the Chinese Deng Xiaoping Reform

North Korean Socio-Economic Change

초록/요약

When the North Korean government’s distribution system failed in the 1990s, the people’s Jangmadang (장마당), or the private market, was born out of a need for survival. Since then, the Jangmadang has played a large part in North Korea’s economic growth. Although the country remains extremely desolate and many continue to experience starvation, a significant portion of the North Korean society is undergoing changes that may even be an indication of future socio-economic developments. In examination of these recent North Korean developments, there seem to be significant events mirroring those of China’s development during the Deng Xiaoping era. Through a comparative case study on the current situation of North Korea and that of the Chinese Deng Xiaoping reform, key findings on the differences and similarities will be analyzed. Therefore, this paper will answer the following questions: “What changes have occurred thus far in North Korea and how much of these changes have been driven by the people?” and “Is North Korea emulating the reform model of China and why or why not?”
