The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has become as centrality and more collective entity in the global economy. It can be shown from the formation of ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) that aimed of realizing the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to improve the economic in the ASEAN region. While ASEAN member countries are focusing on how to achieve its ambitious goals as set by AEC blueprint, it is another issue or agenda require attention from the ASEAN bloc that is the application of Timor-Leste submitted in 2011. This process has been delayed for more than six years and there is no consensus yet on when exactly this young country will be integrated into the ASEAN bloc. There are some positive and negative perspective on this application process. Some members argue and support the application and some are oppose conversely. This paper primarily aims to analyze the cost and benefits for Timor-Leste in joining the ASEAN regional integration in the future as well as find out the current status of the application process, challenges and how it will affect to Timor-Leste’s trade. By analyzing various sources of data, This study found that ASEAN is very important for Timor-Leste whether in political and security as well as in the economical aspect. However, Timor-Leste also recognize there is still challenges and its level of the development which still lag behind which require improvement prior to join the bloc. By participating in ASEAN, it will provide some benefits and disadvantages for both side whether ASEAN as well as Timor-Leste.
