Association of soybean product intake and cardio metabolic syndrome in the Korean adult population : Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2011)

초록/요약

Abstract We purposed to find the effect of soybean product eating habit as an alternative to modern western diet habit, on the prevalence of cardio metabolic disorder and its related factors among the surveyed population. Participants were 15,290 (9,287 female and 6,003 male) adults (20~64 years of age) from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES) Ⅳ, Ⅴ (2007-2011) which is a cross-sectional survey of a nationally representative sample of the Korean population. Data were obtained from a standardized questionnaire as well as anthropometric and biochemical examination reports. The Food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) method was used for dietary assessment. Metabolic syndrome was defined by the modified National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel Ⅲ criteria. General linear model was performed to estimate the trend of cardio metabolic risk factors according to the soy product intake quintile. And multivariable logistic regression (MLR) was performed to estimate the odds of cardio metabolic disorder and its components across each quintile. Least square value of cardio metabolic risk factors mostly showed no significant clinical relevence except liver somatic indexes for both sexes. MLR results for individual components of metabolic syndrome diagnosis after adjusting for various lifestyles and dietary confounders showed that among female the odd ratios (ORs) of central obesity, hyper triglyceride (TG) levels gradually decreased in the 3rd, 4th quintile for soy product intake. However, after counting out Tofu menu items, the ORs of central obesity, high blood pressure, hyper TG, and prevalence of metabolic syndrome all showed obvious decrease across soybean intake quintiles after adjusting for various confounders. MLR data from prevalence of derivative disorders showed diverse result. Among female participants, ORs for metabolic syndrome and Myocardial infarction/ angina pectoris showed a lower score in both 3rd and 4th quintiles. Among male participants, significantly lower ORs for stroke was only for the 5th quintile. Our research found a significant association for soy product intake and prevalence of metabolic disorders and related factors among the female population. Furthermore, following the trend of data after exclusion of tofu items, the finding might suggest a proper method for preparing and an appropriate amount for consuming soy products.
